Visiting Factories & Sourcing in China: A Practical Guide
Planning production for early 2027? Factories slow down for weeks around Chinese New Year (6 February 2027); see our Chinese New Year 2027 guide.
Found a supplier online first? Our guide to buying from 1688 as a foreigner explains how China's domestic wholesale platform works and how to vet sellers before you visit.
Before you go
- Check business licence details (company name, scope, registered capital) via the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System.
- Confirm factory vs trading company.
- Get samples and compare landed cost, not just unit price.
On the visit
- See the production line, raw material storage and QC area.
- Ask for capacity, lead times and previous export customers.
- Use a written checklist and photograph everything.
Meeting suppliers at a trade fair
The Canton Fair in Guangzhou is the biggest single place to meet Chinese exporters; the autumn 2026 session runs in three phases from 15 October to 4 November. See our Canton Fair buyer guide for phase dates, the free badge and how to follow up with factory visits.
Meetings and business dinners
Supplier visits often end with a banquet. Our business etiquette guide covers business cards, seating, toasts, gifts and following up on WeChat.
Entry
Short business visits are allowed under the visa-free rules if your passport qualifies.
For where to stay near suppliers, see hotels in China for foreigners.
