Getting Around China: High-Speed Trains, Metro, Taxis & Flights

Last checked: 2026-11-05. Rules change; always confirm with the official source before you travel.

TL;DR: Book high-speed trains on the official 12306 app or website with your passport, which also works as your ticket. Use the metro with an Alipay or WeChat transport QR code, and DiDi for taxis. Domestic flights also need your passport.

High-speed trains

Book on the official 12306 site/app (English available) or through Trip.com. Step by step: how to book on 12306 as a foreigner. Your passport is your ticket; scan or show it at the gate. Arrive 30–45 minutes early at big stations; there are security checks.

Metro

Every big city has a metro. Pay with the Alipay/WeChat "transport QR code" or buy single tickets at machines.

Taxis

Use DiDi; show the destination in Chinese characters to drivers.

Flights

Useful for long distances (e.g. Beijing–Chengdu, Guilin). Domestic flights need your passport.

Airport transfers

Most big airports have a metro or express train into the city. Flying into Beijing? See our Beijing Capital and Daxing airport guide for fares and last trains.
