Harbin Ice and Snow Festival 2026–27: Winter Trip Guide for Foreigners
Every winter Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang in China's far north-east, builds a city of ice. Palaces, towers and slides are cut from blocks of Songhua River ice and lit up in colour after dark, alongside giant snow sculptures and ice lanterns across the city. For a lot of foreign visitors it is the most memorable thing they do in China, and it is a very different trip from a summer tour of Beijing and Shanghai.
What the festival actually is
"The Harbin Ice Festival" is a season of several separate venues rather than one event:
- Harbin Ice-Snow World (哈尔滨冰雪大世界) on Sun Island, on the north bank of the Songhua: the giant ice-architecture park with the big slides, best seen from late afternoon into the evening when the lights come on.
- Sun Island Snow Sculpture Art Expo (太阳岛雪博会): huge white snow sculptures, better in daylight. In 2026 it soft-opened on 27 December and formally opened on 5 January.
- Zhaolin Park ice lanterns (兆麟公园冰灯): the original ice-lantern show in the city centre, near Central Street.
- The official festival opening: the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival traditionally opens on 5 January, as it did in 2026, although the parks open earlier.
The season usually runs into February, but it depends on the weather: in February 2026 a warm spell forced the main venues to close for a few days and wind down early. Late-season visits carry some melt risk.
When to go
- Late December to mid-February is the main window, once the parks are complete.
- Busiest times: weekends, the New Year holiday and Chinese New Year. The Spring Festival in 2027 falls on 6 February, and the holiday period around it is one of the busiest travel times of the year in China, with sold-out trains and higher hotel prices.
- Quieter: weekdays in the first three weeks of January, apart from New Year's Day.
How cold is it?
Very. January daytime temperatures in Harbin are commonly well below -10°C, and nights regularly fall below -20°C. Standing still on ice in the evening feels colder still. Dress for it:
- Thermal base layers top and bottom, a fleece and a long down coat with a hood
- A hat that covers the ears, a scarf or neck gaiter and a face covering for wind
- Thin touchscreen gloves under thick mittens
- Insulated, waterproof boots with grippy soles, and wool socks. Pavements are icy
- Stick-on heat packs, sold in Chinese convenience stores
- A power bank in an inside pocket: phone batteries drain fast in the cold, and your phone is your wallet, ticket and map
Warm up indoors regularly. If fingers, toes or cheeks go white and numb, go inside and rewarm gradually.
Entry: visa-free options
- 30-day visa-free entry: available to ordinary passport holders from the countries on the unilateral exemption list (most of Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and others). The current list runs until 31 December 2026. For a trip that starts in January 2027 or later, check whether the exemption has been extended before you book. See our visa-free guide.
- 240-hour visa-free transit: Harbin Taiping International Airport is Heilongjiang's only 240-hour transit port, and the permitted stay area in the province is Harbin city. You need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, for example arriving from Seoul and leaving for Tokyo or Hong Kong. If you enter China elsewhere, for example in Beijing, check the permitted area for that port before planning a trip to Harbin.
- Everyone else needs a visa.
Getting to Harbin
- By high-speed train from Beijing: the fastest direct trains from Beijing Chaoyang station to Harbin West take about four and a half hours. Book on 12306 or Trip.com with your passport, and book early for the New Year and Spring Festival periods.
- By air: Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB) has domestic flights from most large Chinese cities and some international routes, mainly within North-East Asia.
- In the city: Metro Line 2 serves Central Street and has a station for Ice-Snow World. DiDi works well and is far more comfortable than waiting for a bus at -20°C. Save destinations in Chinese characters.
Tickets
Foreigners can buy Ice-Snow World tickets with a passport through the park's official WeChat account or Trip.com, which also sells to buyers outside China. Use the same passport at the gate. Prices for 2026–27 have not been published yet; last season had an opening-week discount, so watch for one again. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you travel, since most food stalls and small shops inside the venues take mobile payment.
A simple three-day plan
- Day 1: Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie) and its Russian-era buildings, St Sophia Cathedral, the Songhua riverbank, and Zhaolin Park's ice lanterns after dark.
- Day 2: Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo in daylight, then Ice-Snow World from mid-afternoon through the evening. Ride the big slide early, before the queues build.
- Day 3: activities on the frozen river, a museum or a day at a ski area, plus a plate of guobaorou, Harbin's crispy sweet-and-sour pork.
Hotels
Hotels around Central Street are the most convenient base, close to the metro and the evening venues. Rooms get scarce and expensive around New Year and Spring Festival, so book early and read our guide to hotels and registration for foreigners: you check in with your original passport, and private stays need police registration within 24 hours.
Combine it with Beijing or Shanxi
Harbin pairs well with a few days in Beijing, and winter is a quiet, atmospheric time for Shanxi, where Pingyao's walled old town and Datong's Yungang Grottoes see far fewer crowds than in summer. If your trip includes supplier meetings or factory visits in North China, our Shanxi team can arrange business reception alongside the travel days.
